Most Australian SEO pricing guides put SEO somewhere between $500 and $5,000 a month, but that number on its own tells you very little. What matters is what that money buys: how many hours of real SEO work, who does it, and whether it's aimed at the searches that bring you customers.
I'm Caleb, a local SEO specialist with 7+ years' experience. I've worked on campaigns for law firms, dental practices, trades and insurance brokers, and the cost of SEO is the thing I get asked about most. This guide covers what SEO typically costs, the factors that change it, what you get at different budgets, and how to tell good value from cheap work that costs you more later.
What does SEO cost in Australia?
There's no official SEO price list, and any SEO provider who quotes you a fixed number before looking at your website is guessing. Still, it helps to know the ranges you'll come across when comparing search engine optimisation quotes.
Most Australian agency pricing guides at the top of Google put small business SEO somewhere between $500 and $5,000 a month, with $1,000 to $3,000 a common middle ground. Larger national campaigns, multi-location businesses and ecommerce stores with thousands of products usually cost more.
For a broader benchmark, Ahrefs surveyed 439 SEO providers worldwide (published in 2023, figures in US dollars). Some of the findings:
| What they measured | Result |
|---|---|
| Providers charging a monthly retainer | 78.2% |
| Most common monthly retainer | $501 to $1,000 |
| Average monthly retainer for agencies | about $3,209 |
| Average monthly retainer for freelancers | about $1,349 |
| Average for local SEO | about $1,557 a month |
| Average hourly rate | about $111 |
Those are global figures, so treat them as a rough guide rather than Australian rates. They do show two useful things. Most providers bill on a retainer, and agencies tend to cost more than freelancers and specialists, partly because they're covering account managers, sales teams and office overheads.
Why SEO pricing varies so much
Two businesses can get quotes of $600 and $4,000 for "SEO" and both quotes can be fair. The SEO cost depends on how much work is needed to reach the top of the search results, and that changes from one business to the next.
How competitive your market is
A plumber in a regional town is typically up against a handful of competitors. A personal injury law firm in Sydney is up against national firms with years of content and thousands of backlinks. The tougher the search results, the more content, links and effort it takes to move up, and the higher the cost.
Google Ads data shows this clearly. In Sydney, according to Google Ads keyword data via DataForSEO (October 2026), clicks for searches like plumber, electrician and pest control cost roughly $16 to $28 each. Crowded industries cost more to win, whether you buy clicks or invest in organic rankings.
The state of your website
If your current site is slow, poorly structured or missing pages for your main services, there's foundation work to do before anything else. A site with solid technical SEO, clear pages for each service and a few years of history needs less fixing and can move straight to growth. Some sites require a fresh web design first, which is a separate cost and usually a higher one.
How many services and locations you target
Ranking for one service in one suburb is a very different job to ranking for ten services across five cities. Each one usually needs its own page, its own keyword research and its own content. More targets means a bigger scope, and more SEO hours each month.
Content creation
Content is often the biggest hidden cost in SEO, and it's where a lot of marketing spend goes. Someone has to write the pages and articles that answer what your customers ask search engines. Some of my clients, like lawyers and dentists, prefer to write their own content as subject matter experts, with a brief from me. Busy trades usually want it done for them. Who writes it changes the price.
Link building
In competitive markets, the businesses at the top usually have more quality backlinks than everyone else. Earning or placing relevant links from industry and local websites takes time and often a separate budget. If your competitors are well ahead on links, expect link building to be a bigger part of the cost.
Who you hire
A freelancer, an SEO consultant and a large agency will price the same work differently, depending on their overheads and expertise. With a large digital marketing agency, part of your fee covers people who never touch your website. With a specialist or SEO expert, you're paying for the person who actually does the work. Neither is automatically best, but it's important to know where your money goes.
SEO pricing models
Most SEO providers in Australia typically charge in one of three ways, depending on the scope.
Monthly retainer. You pay a set fee each month for ongoing work: content, links, technical fixes, Google Business Profile updates and reporting. This is the most common model because an SEO campaign keeps delivering results when the work is done consistently.
One-off project. A fixed price for a defined job, such as an SEO audit, a site migration or building a set of new service pages. Good when you have a specific problem or an in-house team to carry on the work.
Hourly consulting. You're billed for time, usually for SEO advice, training or strategy sessions. It suits businesses that do the hands-on work themselves but want an expert to guide them.
What you actually get at different budgets
A retainer is really a number of hours. If a provider bills around $120 an hour, $500 a month buys about four hours of work. That's enough to keep a small Google Business Profile and a few pages ticking over in a quiet market. It isn't enough to compete in a crowded one.
As a rough guide, here's what different budgets tend to cover:
- Under $500 a month. Basic SEO upkeep, a small amount of reporting and maybe one piece of content. Fine for a sole trader in a small town, but very little actual work.
- $1,000 to $2,500 a month. Regular on-page SEO, Google Business Profile optimisation, local citations, a steady flow of content and some link building. This is where most small business SEO campaigns sit.
- $2,500 to $5,000+ a month. More content, a proper link budget, multiple locations or services, and more room for strategy and testing. Usually needed for highly competitive industries or bigger cities.
These are typical ranges, not rules, and they're based on my experience across the market. A smaller budget spent on the right things beats a bigger one spent on busywork.
The real cost of cheap SEO
Cheap SEO isn't always bad, but very low fees usually mean one of three things. The provider is doing very little, the work is outsourced to whoever is cheapest, or they're using shortcuts like bulk links from spammy websites.
Those shortcuts can do lasting damage. Low quality links can hold your site back for months and take time and money to clean up. Thin, copied content doesn't rank on any search engine, and it doesn't convert the people who find it either. Fake reviews carry similar risks with Google. By the time you notice, you've paid for a year of SEO and you're further behind than when you started, without the traffic or leads you were promised.
Warning signs to look for in an SEO quote:
- Guaranteed first page rankings. Nobody controls Google, and anyone who promises it is overselling.
- Long lock-in contracts with no way out if results don't come.
- Vague deliverables like "optimisation" with no detail on what gets done each month.
- No access to your own data. You should be able to check rankings and traffic any time.
- Cheap bulk links, or a provider who won't tell you where links come from.
How to work out your SEO budget
Rather than starting with the cost of SEO, focus on the numbers that matter: your goals and what a new customer is worth to you.
Say an average job is worth $2,000 and you win one in four enquiries. Ten extra enquiries a month from SEO means about $5,000 in extra revenue. If SEO costs $1,500 a month and gets you there, it covers itself well before the rankings are fully established. That's the real return on your SEO investment. Your own numbers will be different, so work them out with your real average job value and close rate.
Keep in mind that SEO is slow to build. Most businesses see early movement within a few months, but harder keywords usually take six to twelve months or more. Budget for long enough to follow it through. Stopping at month three is often the most expensive option, because you've paid for the groundwork and missed the growth.
Is SEO a better investment than Google Ads?
Paid search brings leads quickly, which is why many businesses use it as their main online marketing channel. But every click costs money and the leads stop as soon as the spend stops. SEO is slower to start, but the visibility and traffic you build keeps working. Many business owners run both while their organic rankings grow, then shift more of their marketing budget into SEO as it starts bringing in steady enquiries. It also helps you show up in AI answers like Google's AI Overviews, which often cite pages that already rank well in SEO terms.
If clicks in your industry cost $20 or more, even a modest amount of organic traffic adds up to a lot of marketing value over a year.
How I price SEO
I don't publish a set fee, because one number would be wrong for most businesses. Your industry, the competition, the state of your website and your budget all change what's needed.
Instead, I start with a free SEO audit. I review your website, your Google Business Profile, your backlinks and the competitors ranking ahead of you. Then I explain what I'd fix first and give you a quote based on that scope of work, depending on how much needs doing. There are no lock-in contracts, and you get a live dashboard to track rankings and traffic whenever you like.
I handle the audits, SEO strategy, content briefs and reporting myself, with a freelance copywriter and developer helping on implementation. You deal directly with the person running your campaign, not an account manager. Everything that's included is on my SEO services page.
