SEO for Lawyers and Law Firms

Law firm SEO is the work that gets you found when potential clients search for legal help in your area of law and city. I'm Caleb, a local SEO specialist with 7+ years' experience, and I've worked on law firms including Turner Freeman, Attwood Marshall and MST Lawyers.

What is law firm SEO?

Law firm SEO is improving your website, Google Business Profile and online presence so potential clients find your firm when they search for legal help. For most firms across Australia that means three places: the Google Maps results, the organic search results underneath, and increasingly AI answers such as Google's AI Overviews and ChatGPT.

It works differently to Google Ads. Ads put you at the top for as long as you keep paying. SEO builds rankings you own, so enquiries keep coming without paying for every click. Plenty run both: ads for speed, SEO for long-term legal marketing.

Why SEO for lawyers is different

Google treats legal content as "Your Money or Your Life" (YMYL). A bad answer about a divorce, a will or a criminal charge can genuinely hurt someone, so Google holds law firm websites to a higher standard of trust than most industries. That standard is usually described as E-E-A-T: experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust.

Expertise

Qualifications, admissions, accreditations

Authoritativeness

Directory listings, mentions, links

Trust

Reviews, clear contact details, accurate firm information

What E-E-A-T looks like on a law firm website.
01

Your team is the proof

Detailed solicitor bios do a lot of the heavy lifting: qualifications, admission, areas of law, years of experience, a photo and a link to their LinkedIn, all tied together with schema so Google connects each solicitor to your team. It's the first thing I check on a law firm website, and it's usually the thinnest part.

02

Every area of law is its own market

Someone searching for a family lawyer and someone searching for a commercial lawyer are different people with different questions. Each area of law needs its own page, its own keywords and its own answers, not one services overview trying to rank for everything.

03

Directories compete for the same searches

Legal directories and lead-generation sites often sit above firms for the searches that matter. When a directory outranks a client, the practical move is to get you listed on it properly. You still get found, and the listing adds credibility.

04

Legal marketing rules still apply

Lawyers have conduct rules around advertising, and some states restrict how personal injury services can be promoted. Titles like "accredited specialist" should only appear where the lawyer actually holds that accreditation. Your team reviews and signs off on all content before it goes live.

What's included in my SEO for your law firm

These are the pieces of your SEO strategy that improve visibility. I prioritise them based on what is actually holding you back, rather than running the same checklist for everyone.

01

Google Business Profile for law firms

Accurate categories, practice areas as services, real photos, a steady review process and one profile per genuine office. I keep profiles clean from day one, with real addresses and no keyword-stuffed business names, because that's how you avoid suspensions in the first place.

02

Practice area and team profiles

I map the keywords for each area of law, plan the page structure and brief the content. Your lawyers are the subject matter experts, so I prefer your team writes the content to my brief. If that isn't realistic, my freelance copywriter writes to the same brief and your team reviews it.

03

Internal linking

The biggest mistake I see on law firm websites is little to no internal linking. Most teams publish blog posts regularly and then do nothing with them. Every article should link to the practice area page it supports, so the authority it earns flows to the pages that actually bring in new clients.

04

Technical SEO and schema

Fast, crawlable content with legal service, solicitor and FAQ schema, so search engines and AI tools can understand who your lawyers are and what you offer.

Citations and legal directories

Consistent name, address and phone details across directories, plus listings on the legal directories that rank for your areas of law.

Link building

How I'd approach your firm's SEO

  1. 1

    Free audit

I review your website, your profile, lawyer bios and the firms outranking you in each area of law.

  2. 2

A quote based on the audit

I don't publish a set price for law firm SEO. The number of services and offices, how competitive your city is and the state of your website all change the work involved. The audit tells me what's needed, then I quote. No lock-in contracts.

  3. 3

    Keyword and content mapping

Each practice area gets its own keyword set and a target page, so nothing competes with itself.

  4. 4

    Monthly implementation

Profile updates, content improvements, internal links, citations and links, worked through every month in priority order.

  5. 5

    Live reporting

You get a live dashboard to check rankings any time, rather than waiting for a monthly PDF.

What clients say about working with me

How long does law firm SEO take?

Most firms see early movement in Google Maps and for less competitive services within the first few months. Competitive terms, such as family or criminal law in a capital city, usually take six to twelve months or longer. It depends on your competition, your website's starting point and how quickly changes get made. Anyone who promises a date is guessing, because nobody controls Google's algorithm.

Typical timeline, varies by market

  1. Stage 1

    Months 1 to 3

Foundations, your profile and quick wins

  2. Stage 2

    Months 3 to 6

Practice area guides gain ground, Maps visibility improves

  3. Stage 3

    Months 6 to 12+

    Competitive terms in capital cities

Timing depends on your market and starting point.

Who this is for (and who it isn't)

Fit if

  • You're an independent or boutique firm that wants more enquiries in specific areas of law
  • You want to deal directly with the person running your SEO
  • Your team can help with bios and content, or you're happy for my copywriter to write and you review
  • You can give access to your website and Maps listing

Not a fit if

  • You want guaranteed top rankings
  • You want dozens of thin suburb pages
  • You only want paid ads
  • You want a large agency with account managers

Law firm SEO FAQs

Legal SEO is improving your website, Google Business Profile and online reputation so you appear when people search for legal help in your areas of law and location. It covers practice area guides, lawyer bios, technical fixes, reviews, citations and links.

It depends on the number of practice areas and offices, how competitive your market is and the state of your website. I run a free audit first, then quote based on what your firm actually needs. There are no lock-in contracts.

Early movement usually shows within a few months, especially in Google Maps. Competitive practice areas in capital cities typically take six to twelve months or more.

Through your live dashboard: rankings for each practice area, Google Maps visibility, organic traffic and enquiries tracked in GA4. I focus on enquiries from potential clients, not vanity rankings.

Ads deliver enquiries quickly but stop when the spend stops. SEO takes longer but builds rankings you keep. Many firms use ads while SEO builds, then rely more on organic leads over time.

No, and be careful of anyone who does. What I can promise is that the work gets done properly every month and you can see the results on your live dashboard.

Yes. I've worked on firms covering personal injury, family law, wills and estates, property, commercial and general legal services. Each service gets its own keyword research and content plan.

Ideally your legal team, because they're the subject matter experts and the content is better for it. I provide the brief and structure. If your team doesn't have time, my freelance copywriter writes to the same brief and your firm reviews it before it's published.

It helps. AI tools pull from the same signals: clear answers, consistent details, strong team profiles and reputable mentions that support your credibility. The same work that improves your Google visibility improves how AI describes your firm.
