SEO Cairns

SEO gets your business found on Google when people in Cairns and Far North Queensland search for what you do, in the map pack and the organic search results underneath. I'm Caleb, a local SEO specialist with 7+ years' experience. I'm based on the Gold Coast and work with Queensland businesses remotely, so you deal directly with me over video calls, email and a live reporting dashboard.

What does SEO mean for a Cairns business?

Search engine optimisation (SEO) is the work that helps Google trust your business enough to show it when someone nearby searches for your service, and turns that search traffic into calls and enquiries. For most local businesses it comes down to three things working together: your Google Business Profile, your website, and how consistent your business details are across online directories.

Cairns is a good market for it. Many local service searches here are less competitive than the same searches in Brisbane or Sydney, so a well-run SEO strategy can often move faster on a smaller budget, and the results build long term rather than stopping when an ad budget runs out. The same work also shapes how AI tools such as ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews describe your business.

Why Cairns needs a different approach

Cairns isn't Brisbane with a smaller population. It's the business hub for a huge region, it runs on a mix of local customers and visitors, and demand for some services swings with the seasons.

01

Locals and tourists search differently

A Redlynch family looking for a plumber and a visitor planning a reef trip from Melbourne or overseas are completely different customers. Tourism operators often need to rank for people who are still planning their holiday, not just people already in town. Your keywords and content need to match the customers you actually want.

02

A city that serves a whole region

Plenty of Cairns businesses take work from the Northern Beaches down to Gordonvale and up onto the Tablelands. The map pack leans heavily on distance, so I'll be upfront about which areas you can realistically compete in, and build your visibility out from there.

03

Demand moves with the weather

Searches for some services rise and fall through the year. Your Google Business Profile, service pages and reviews need to be in shape before your busy season starts, not halfway through it.

04

Real local detail, not page farms

Someone searching for an electrician in Smithfield wants a business that actually services Smithfield. I won't spin up dozens of near-identical suburb landing pages to chase rankings. Duplicate content at scale can drag down your whole site.

Seasonal search demand in Cairns

Here's how searches for "air conditioning cairns" changed month to month over the past year. Demand in late 2025 was several times higher than in the middle of 2026. If your business has a busy season, the SEO work needs to be done in the quieter months before it.

How Google decides who shows up in the map pack

Google weighs three things when it decides which businesses appear in the map pack.

01

Relevance

How well your Google Business Profile, categories and website content match what someone searched for.

02

Distance

How close your address or service area is to the person searching. This one is mostly outside your control, and I won't pretend otherwise.

03

Prominence

Your reviews, citations, backlinks and online reputation.

Each of these ties back to something I work on every month. Relevance means fixing categories and rewriting thin service pages. Prominence means a steady review habit, quality backlinks and clean citations. Distance means focusing on the parts of Cairns where you can win, rather than promising the whole region.

What's included in my SEO services

My Cairns SEO services cover six things working together. None of them do much on their own, which is why a one-off profile tweak rarely makes a difference. I start with whatever is holding your rankings back the most.

02

Keyword research

Finding the keywords your customers actually search, including visitors planning a trip, and mapping them to the right pages.

03

On-page SEO

Making sure service and location pages properly answer the searches they're meant to win, so search engines and customers both understand what you offer.

How I'd approach your SEO campaign

  1. 1

    Free audit

I review your website, Google Business Profile, citations and the competitors showing up ahead of you, then walk you through it on a video call.

  2. 2

A quote based on the audit

I don't publish set packages. Your industry, the competition and the state of your website all change the scope. The audit shapes the SEO strategy, then I quote. No lock-in contracts.

  3. 3

    Priorities

We start with the changes most likely to bring in more calls and leads. Usually that's your Google profile, your main service pages and any listings with the wrong details.

  4. 4

    Monthly implementation

I handle the audits, strategy, briefs and reports. My freelance copywriter and developer help with implementation when needed, and I check their work before it goes live.

  5. 5

    Live reporting

A live dashboard to check rankings, organic traffic and growth any time, rather than waiting for a monthly PDF. I keep a cap of 30 clients so every campaign gets proper attention.

Where most owners go wrong

Most of this isn't complicated. It's just unglamorous, and it gets skipped because nobody is watching closely.

  • A Google Business Profile that was claimed once and never touched again
  • Paying for social media and ads but leaving the website and search presence untouched
  • Business name, address and phone details that don't match across directories
  • One generic page trying to rank for every suburb from Palm Cove to Gordonvale
  • Leaving SEO until the busy season has already started
  • No real way to see whether SEO brings in organic traffic or enquiries, just a monthly PDF weeks after the fact

How long does SEO take in Cairns?

Most clients see early movement in Google Maps within a couple of months, with stronger results over three to six months. Competitive services take longer. It depends on your competition, your website's starting point and how quickly changes get made. Nobody controls Google's algorithm, so I won't promise you a date.

Typical timeline

  1. Stage 1

    Months 1 to 3

Profile, citations and early Maps visibility

  2. Stage 2

    Months 3 to 6

Content and links start moving rankings

  3. Stage 3

    Months 6 to 12+

    Competitive terms and wider areas

Typical timeline, varies by market

SEO Cairns FAQs

Most of my clients are small businesses, and I don't publish set packages. It depends on your industry, the competition and the state of your website. Many Cairns searches are less competitive than the big cities, which can mean a smaller scope. I run a free audit first, then quote. No lock-in contracts. For a broader guide, read how much SEO costs in Australia.

You'll usually see early movement in Google Maps within a couple of months, with stronger results over three to six months. Competitive services need longer.

No. I'm based on the Gold Coast, and SEO work happens on your website, your Google Business Profile and across the web, not in a local office. We'll talk over video calls, and you can check progress on your live dashboard any time. What matters is understanding your area and your competitors, which is what the audit covers.

Yes. Tourism operators usually need two things: map pack visibility for people already in Cairns, and pages that rank for the searches visitors make while planning their trip. The audit shows which of those is the bigger opportunity for you.

Often, yes, but distance plays a big part in the map pack. If you have a real presence or take regular jobs in both areas, we can build that into your profile, content and citations. If not, I'll tell you where your best chances are.

No, and be wary of anyone who does. What I can promise is the work gets done properly every month and you can see the results on your live dashboard.

It helps. A consistent online presence across your Google Business Profile, website and citations helps AI tools describe your business accurately. Morgan Insurance Brokers' ChatGPT enquiry actions grew from 73 to 187 year on year.

No. You stay because the work is delivering, not because you're locked in.
