SEO for Landscapers

SEO puts your landscaping company in front of homeowners when they search Google for a landscaper, a garden makeover or new retaining walls in their area. I'm Caleb, a local SEO specialist with 7+ years' experience working with trade and service businesses across Australia, and I build the SEO strategy around how your clients actually search.

What is SEO for landscapers?

SEO for landscapers is the work that gets your landscaping business found on Google. That means showing up in the map results when someone searches for a "landscaper", in the organic search results for services like landscape design, turf or retaining walls, and increasingly in AI answers. It covers your website, your Google Business Profile, your reviews and the links that build trust with Google.

Paid leads from quote sites and directories often go to several landscaping companies at once. Enquiries from search come straight to your business, and they keep coming without paying for every click. That's why search engine optimisation is one of the best long-term marketing investments for a local landscaping business.

What makes landscaping SEO different

Landscaping is visual, seasonal and local, and your SEO strategy needs to reflect all three to reach the top of the page.

01

Demand peaks in spring

Searches for landscapers rise in spring and drop over the Christmas break. Google Ads data shows "landscaping near me" at about 6,600 searches a month in September and October 2025, compared with about 4,400 in December. Your pages need to rank before the busy season starts, not during it.

02

Your work sells the job

Homeowners like to see finished projects before they get in touch. A project gallery with real images, a short description and the suburb each job was in helps people trust you and gives Google more local information. Compressed files and descriptive alt text keep each page fast and help you use your best photos without slowing the site.

03

Every service is a different search

Someone searching for a landscape designer or landscape gardener is a different customer to someone looking for garden maintenance, lawn care or new retaining walls. Each main service needs its own page that answers that customer's specific questions.

04

The map pack decides most local jobs

When people search for a landscaper in their suburb, the map results usually appear at the top of the page. Your Google Business Profile, your service area and your reviews often decide whether you get the enquiry. It's the part of local SEO most landscapers underuse.

What's included in my landscaping SEO

I start with whatever is costing you enquiries right now, then move through the rest each month.

01

Keyword research

Keyword research to find the landscaping searches in your area that turn into quotes, from garden design to paving and turf, and mapping each one to the right page.

02

Your Maps listing

Google Business Profile optimisation: categories, services, service areas, project images and a steady review process so you show up in Google Maps across the suburbs you cover.

03

Service and location pages

Through on-page SEO, I create service pages for each core landscaping service and the areas you cover, with unique SEO content instead of copy-paste suburb pages.

04

Technical SEO

Technical SEO covers site speed, mobile usability, indexing and schema markup, so every search engine can find, crawl and understand your landscaping website.

05

Local citations

Local citations give you a consistent business name, address and phone number across directories so Google trusts your details.

06

Link building

Link building earns relevant backlinks from suppliers, local businesses and landscape industry websites to build the authority that separates the top results.

Content that wins landscaping jobs

Good content answers the questions homeowners ask before they hire a landscaper. It also gives search engines more reasons to show your website, and it's a big part of any landscaping SEO strategy.

01

Match the search intent

Someone using Google search for "landscape design ideas" is researching. Someone searching "landscaper Brisbane" is ready to get quotes. Your service pages should target the second group, while a blog post or guide can capture the researchers and lead visitors to your services page.

02

Write about real local jobs

A short write-up on a backyard makeover in a specific suburb, with a few pictures, the plants you used and how long it took, is better content than a generic article. It shows your experience, helps with local rankings and gives potential customers a clear example of what you do, with real information about the job.

03

Cover your full range of services

If you offer landscape design, garden design, lawn care, irrigation, paving and turf, each one deserves its own page and proper coverage. Many landscaping websites list services in one line, which gives Google very little to rank.

Common SEO mistakes landscapers make

These are the problems I see most often when I audit trade websites, and they're common on landscaping websites too. Each one holds back your site's position in the search engine results.

  • One page for everything. A single services page can't rank for garden design, retaining walls and lawn care all at once.
  • Huge, slow images. Beautiful project photos are important, but uncompressed files slow the website down and hurt the user experience on mobile.
  • No reviews strategy. Waiting for reviews to arrive on their own means competitors with a review process keep pulling ahead.
  • Inconsistent business details. A different phone number or old address on directories confuses Google and makes your listing less trustworthy.
  • No tracking. Without call and form tracking, you can't tell which pages and keywords bring in jobs, so you can't improve them.

Fixing these is often the quickest way to improve your online presence before any new content goes up.

How Google ranks landscaping websites

Google looks at three main ranking factors when it decides which landscaping website to show in local search: relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well your website and profile match the search. Distance is how close your business is to the person searching or the area they name. Prominence is how well known and trusted your business is online, which comes from reviews, links and mentions across the web. Google explains these factors in its own Business Profile help pages.

You can't change where your yard or office is, but you can improve relevance with strong service and location content, and prominence with reviews, local citations and quality links. That's where most of my time goes on a landscaping SEO campaign, year round.

How working together works

  1. 1

    Free audit

I review your website, Google Business Profile, backlinks and the competitors ranking ahead of you, and share the best opportunities I find.

  2. 2

A quote based on the audit

I don't publish a set price. Your area, the competition and the state of your website all change the scope. The audit tells me what's needed, then I quote. No lock-in contracts.

  3. 3

    Monthly work

Content, link building, profile updates and technical SEO fixes, done each month in order of impact.

  4. 4

    Live reporting

A live dashboard to check rankings, traffic and enquiries any time.

Trade businesses I've worked with

I've worked with trade and service clients across Australia, including Jetset Plumbing, Advanced Clean Air, Total Air Conditioning and Perth TV Antennas. Landscapers win jobs the same way: through the map results, strong service pages and reviews. My experience across the trade industry carries straight over.

How long does landscaping SEO take?

Typical timeline

  1. Stage 1

    Months 1 to 3

technical SEO fixes, on-page fixes and your Google profile.

  2. Stage 2

    Months 3 to 6

content and links start moving rankings.

  3. Stage 3

    Months 6 to 12+

    competitive keywords.

Typical timeline, varies by market

Most landscaping clients see early movement within a few months, especially in the map results. Competitive keywords in the big cities usually take six to twelve months or more. Starting before spring gives your pages time to rank before your busiest months.

Is landscaper SEO a good fit for you?

  • You need more enquiries from homeowners in your area.
  • You'd rather deal directly with the person running your campaign.
  • You can share photos of your projects.
  • You can give access to your website and Google profile.
  • You expect guaranteed first page rankings.
  • You're after cheap, bulk backlinks.
  • You want dozens of thin suburb pages.
  • You'd prefer a large agency with account managers.

SEO for landscapers FAQs

It depends on your area, your competition and your website. I start with a free SEO audit, then quote based on what your business needs. No lock-in contracts. For more detail, read my guide to how much SEO costs in Australia.

Not with copy-paste content. A handful of useful location pages, backed by real projects in those areas, works better than dozens of thin pages.

Yes, when they're your own. Images of real projects help customers trust you and help Google understand your services. Keep them compressed so your website stays fast, and describe each one with alt text.

Ads bring enquiries quickly but stop when you stop paying. SEO takes longer but builds visibility you keep. Many landscapers run ads in spring while their organic search results improve.

Word of mouth is great, but it's hard to grow a business on. SEO puts your landscaping company in front of people who don't know anyone to ask yet. Even a few extra quality jobs a month from Google can make the investment worthwhile, and the visibility keeps building over time.

Many digital marketing agencies offer SEO alongside ads, social media and web design, often with a team of account managers in between. I focus only on local SEO and use the same process for every client, so you deal with the person doing the keyword research, writing the briefs and checking your website's progress each month.

No, and be wary of anyone who does. What I can promise is everything gets done properly every month and you can see the results on your live dashboard.
